Burghwallis Christmas Tree Lighting

A good number of residents and visitors gathered in the dark in Old Village Street on 6th December to witness the now annual celebration of lighting the Christmas tree. A team of volunteers dressed the tree such that it is almost as good looking in the daylight as at night. The lights were installed with the help of Brian Bennett and Heinz Offermans and the decorations placed by Joyce Offerman and parish councillors; Jill, Brenda and Kath.

Carols were sung spearheaded by St Helen’s church choir and accompanied by Mrs Pat Stanley on the organ. Such an event cannot possibly take place without mince pies which were donated by many residents. It was good to see that the main event was cheered on by the growing number of children attending the ceremony  who were made to shout ‘Merry Christmas’ and after several attempts their volume was just sufficient to trigger the light switch.
