Message From South Yorkshire Police

Dear all,

Please be aware of the following:

The Yorkshire and Humber Region has seen a significant increase in reports of vulnerable people being ‘cold called’ by Bogus Police Officers over the telephone. To date there have been over 46 reports across the region of victims being phoned by offenders impersonating a police officer.

Victims are told their bank account has been compromised and they need to transfer money to another account or hand it directly to a ‘Police Officer’. During the conversation the fraudsters will ‘connect’ the victim to their bank to confirm what they are saying but this connection will be false.
Victims are encouraged to hang up and wait 5 minutes to ensure the connection has been cleared and then contact their banks or use a mobile phone to make the call.

The public are reminded that the Police will never ‘cold call’ and ask personal details about bank accounts. If anyone is worried or has been contacted by these bogus Police Officers please contact the Police on 101 or if it’s happening at the time 999.
